The Cathedral

Modeled 1908; cast 1925
Auguste Rodin (French, 1840–1917) Cast by the founder Alexis Rudier, Paris (1874–1952)

Rodin’s belief in the expressive power of every aspect of human anatomy led to some of his most radical experiments, like this sculpture of two right hands. The sculptor published a book on the Gothic cathedrals of France in 1914 and renamed this piece, formerly known as The Arch of Alliance, in an allusion to the rib vaulting found in Gothic churches.
